Cypress has been a cornerstone of American architecture for centuries, earning the nickname “The Wood Eternal” due to its incredible longevity. From the traditional French Creole cottages of the Mississippi Valley to the expansive coastal estates of the Southeast, it was the primary choice for early builders who required a material that could withstand extreme humidity and coastal exposure without failing. This legacy continues today, as Cypress remains a staple in architectural design for its ability to bridge the gap between historic durability and modern aesthetics.
Clear Mixed Grain
Clear Mixed Grain (CMG) Cypress features a blend of flat and vertical grain patterns, offering a natural and varied appearance across the installation. This grade is sorted to ensure it is free of most prominent knots, providing a clear surface that highlights the wood’s organic grain structure. When combined with our factory finishes, CMG creates a sophisticated, textured look suitable for large-scale interior wall and ceiling applications where a more dynamic visual is desired.
- Contains both vertical grain and wider grain patterns
- Some boards will contain v-shaped cathedraling
- May occasionally contain very small knots
Clear Vertical Grain
Clear Vertical Grain (CVG) Cypress is our highest grade, specified for projects where maximum dimensional stability and a clean, linear aesthetic are required. The vertical grain orientation significantly reduces the wood’s natural tendency to expand or contract, making it the ideal selection for exterior siding in challenging climates. CVG provides a uniform, consistent backdrop for our artisan finishes, resulting in a disciplined and modern architectural look.
Cypress C&BTR MG Milling Profiles
Hewn’s Cypress C&BTR MG is sold in a variety of widths and thicknesses, noted in our specification documents. All of our Cypress is milled to your requested specifications in-house, allowing for the highest level of oversight throughout the entire production process. Our most common profiles are shown below in both 1×6 and 1×8 widths.
